Three-year holding test — what to track

Indicative checklist for the Czech securities holding-period test: lots, FIFO, acquisition dates. Not tax advice.

What this is about

In Czechia, individuals often care about exemption of securities sale income after a holding period (commonly called a “time test”; historically also a three-year horizon — always verify current law).

This guide is an evidence checklist, not instructions for a tax return.

What to track per lot

Acquisition date of specific shares, quantity, cost including fees, and currency. Top-ups create lots — not one averaged security.

On a sale, FIFO consumes the oldest lots first. Those lots determine how long those shares were held.

Practical checklist before selling

1) List open lots from oldest. 2) See which lots the sale hits. 3) Check holding time from acquisition to sale date for each. 4) Separate fees and FX into CZK. 5) Treat dividends separately — they are not sale P&L.

If limits, exemptions or exceptions are unclear, pause with a tax advisor or read the current statute.

How a portfolio ledger helps

A clear trade book (date, ticker, side, qty, price, fees) is the foundation. Without it, holding test and FIFO are only rough guesses from broker statements.

Investiv can keep trades and a FIFO view of realized P&L; tax decisions stay yours.
