Getting started investing — a map for newcomers
A short, human series on why people invest, whether starting is hard, what beginners often look at first, and where to read more. Not financial advice.
Welcome — no magic, no hustle tips
From the outside, investing looks like a club of acronym speakers staring at colourful charts. Inside it is mostly a long habit: setting money aside, understanding basic risk, and not letting every headline kick you out of your shoes.
This series is an introductory map. No “buy X and get rich”, no ticker tip. Just principles that help before you dive into glossary details or a tracker like Investiv.
What you will find in the series
1) Why people invest at all — including the unlovely word inflation. 2) Whether starting is hard (spoiler: opening an account is often easier than managing emotions). 3) What beginners often think about first. 4) Links to sites for rates, news and official information.
Still true: this is not investment or tax advice. Decisions are yours; we only sketch the basics.
How to read this so it sticks
Treat the texts like a coffee chat, not an exam textbook. When you hit a term (ETF, broker, volatility), jump to the glossary — then come back.
Once you have first trades, a ledger helps: what you bought, when, at what price, and with which fees. Without notes, even a “simple” portfolio turns to fog.
