Volatility describes how much price swings. Higher volatility means larger moves up and down.

Volatility is a measure of price fluctuation over time. Higher volatility means larger short-term swings both ways.

It is not the same as long-term loss risk, but it affects how hard the path to return is to sit through — and when you buy or sell.
